Wednesday was the Fresno State Bulldogs' 13th practice of Fall Camp and their 28th practice of the year dating back to the spring under Jeff Tedford's new coaching staff. But it was the first practice of 2022 for star offensive lineman Dontae Bull. Bull has started 25 of the Bulldogs' 31 games at left tackle over the past three seasons. He was one of the five Mountain West O-Linemen selected to the preseason all-conference team in July.

But an offseason procedure had sidelined him shortly after the end of the 2021 season. Bull observed the team's first 12 preseason practices from the sideline - then suddenly suited up on Day 13. Bull's practice appearance was the first time that Fresno State's four new defensive assistant coaches saw the veteran O-Lineman lined up against them. "I don't know a whole lot, other than what we've seen from past performances," new defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said of Bull. Only defensive players and coaches were available to the media on Wednesday. "He's been out for quite a while. He's got to work his way back into shape. I'm looking at my defensive guys in practice so I'm not really that concerned about who is on offense. In a few more days I'll have a better feeling about where he's at. I know it was great to see him out here." - 247sports.com

Senior Tyrone Sampson Jr. has had a few opportunities to secure a spot in the Bulldogs' offensive line rotation, but the former 4-star recruit in the 2018 recruiting class is putting together the pieces this fall. Sampson has played primarily as a center, but has lined up with the No. 1 offense at right and left guard in fall camp. A big piece to that equation has been nutrition, and his weight. "Tyrone has changed his body," offensive line coach Saga Tuitele said. "Tyrone has done a great job. Heck, he inspired me. But he has changed his body. He's in good shape and he's working his tail off." Sampson said his diet had resembled that of a typical college student.

But most aren't 6-foot-3 and 305 pounds, and don't spend hours in a day on the practice field or in the weight room. "That process has been going on since about January, when we came back," he said. "I got on a plan with (assistant athletics director for sports performance Andy Ward). He explained to me what I should be eating and what might not be so good to eat. The things that I should be eating really shook things up. I started seeing little changes in my body here and there. I'm trying to stay consistent with it. "It definitely feels different. I feel like I can go more full speed. I can last longer on drives. I just feel better moving play to play, moving in space. I feel like I'm moving a lot better than I was last year." - Fresno Bee

If UCF football coach Gus Malzahn were required to choose a starting quarterback between sophomore Mikey Keene and Ole Miss transfer John Rhys Plumlee tomorrow, he'd likely have to flip a coin. "Right now it's as even as it can get," Malzahn said Thursday about the quarterback battle during AAC football media day. Malzahn reiterated his plan to wait to name a starter after the first two scrimmages of UCF's fall camp that kicks off Sunday when the players report and start practice Monday.

Malzahn, who's entering his second year at UCF after coaching at Auburn from 2013-20, shared how some quarterback battles he's handed have gone in the past. "In my experience with quarterbacks, naming [a starter], setting a date and all of that, it's really tough," he said. "Usually there's a time in fall camp that something happens where everyone on the team knows who the starting quarterback is and a lot of the times the coach doesn't even have to say anything. "So we're hoping that happens." Keene took over the starting job last season after former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel broke his collarbone in the third week of the season. A true freshman a year ago, Keene struggled at times but got better as the season went on. After throwing 6 interceptions in his first five starts, Keene wasn't picked off once in the final five. He finished with more than 1,700 yards, completing 63% of his passes for 17 touchdowns. - Orlando Sentinel

Tedford retired as Fresno State's head coach because of heart-related concerns. When successor Kalen DeBoer accepted the Washington job in December, the Bulldogs reached out to Tedford, who had regained full health. "It was almost like I never left," Tedford said. Quarteback Jake Haener, who entered the transfer portal after DeBoer bolted, decided to remain at Fresno. Haener is the league's most accurate passer (67.1%, with 33 TDs against nine picks). Also staying put are wideout Jalen Cropper (85 catches in 2021), running back Jordan Mims (236 all-purpose yards in theNew Mexico Bowl), and safety Evan Williams.

Haener jots notes on tips, suggestions and observations involving football. The notes are labeled by date and topic, then placed in binders. He has a dozen filled binders at his family's home and another eight in Fresno. One of the entries details a meeting with Tedford when Haener was 9 years old. During a lengthy career, Tedford has coached six quarterbacks who were first-round draft picks. Tedford said Aaron Rodgers, whom he coached for two seasons at Cal, and Haener share many of the same qualities. - Honolulu Advertiser

At some point in the spring, while dueling the Bulldogs defense and coordinator Kevin Coyle, Jake Haener says he knew that was a brain he wanted to pick and he has twice and sometimes three times a week. "He was just throwing a lot of different pressures from me that I had never seen before, that's from the Minnesota Vikings guy and his time in the league," Haener said. "It was a lot of different things that I hadn't seen at the college level that is really 2.0, and I just wanted to sit down with him, talk it through with him and understand it, get a better idea of how defenses are going to attack me this fall and then just talk defense." "The more you learn and know about the game, the better you're going to play. I think the thing that's going to separate me is the mental game and the mental aspect of things and the intangible piece. I've been putting a lot of time on that, just trying to be sharper, be smarter and more mature."

Tedford said that is a critical piece in Haener's development, and more educated risks can pay great rewards. "There are not too many people that can throw the ball like Jake can throw the ball and that work as hard as he works in the film room," Tedford said. "He is completely dedicated to his craft. I don't care if that's with his nutrition, his sleep. The guy is completely dedicated to being the best player he can possibly be." The game is slowing down for Haener, more comfortable with the offense and now opposing defenses. "I really was last year, too, but I just think it's going to be a lot slower for me this year," Haener said. "The game is going to slow down for me and I'm going to take that next step that I've been trying to take. I took that from my first year to my second year and I think my second year to third year is going to be even better. "It's all experience. I've played in some big games now. We've won some big games. I'm excited for what's to come." - Fresno Bee

Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener was selected as the preseason Mountain West offensive player of year on Thursday, Day Two of the conference media days. He was joined on the team by wideout Jalen Cropper, running back Jordan Mims, offensive tackle Dontae Bull and safety Evan Williams. The five Bulldogs selected are their most since 2014 and second most in their 12 years in the conference, behind seven in 2013 including quarterback Derek Carr and wideout Davante Adams. Therein is a challenge for the Bulldogs quarterback and an offense that returns 83% of its offensive production - Fresno State on Wednesday was picked to win the West Division in the conference, with 20 of 28 first-place votes.

"Jalen and I have already talked about it," Haener said. "We want to put up some similar stuff to what Derek and Davante did and just be the best version of ourselves." Carr in 2013 hit 68.7% of his passes for 5,083 yards with 50 touchdowns and only eight interceptions, and Adams caught 131 passes for 1,719 yards and 24 touchdowns. The 68.7%, 5,083 and 50 passing touchdowns by Carr were all school single-season records as were the 131 receptions, 1,719 yards and 24 touchdown receptions by Adams, and those 24 touchdown catches came at a time when the school career record was only 25; Henry Ellard (1979-82), then Charlies Jones (1992-95) and Bernard Berrian (1999-2003). But Haener and Cropper hinted at the best version of themselves and their upside at times last season, and have similarities to Carr and Adams with the Bulldogs' wideout moving outside after lining up in the slot on 94.5% of his snaps in 2021 when he caught 85 passes for 899 yards with 11 touchdowns. - Fresno Bee
